STRENGTHENING FAMILIES (SFP)- is a nationally recognized, evidence-based parenting and family-strengthening
program that significantly reduces problem behaviors in chidren, improves school performance, and reduces delinquency and alcohol
and drug use in teenagers. SFP is designed to achieve the following objectives: 1) decreased use and intention to use tobacco,
alcohol and illicit drugs; 2) decreased children's behavior problems; 3)increased children's social and life skills; 4) increased
family cohesion, communication and organization; and 5) reduced risk factors and increased resilience, assets, and protective factors.
The Strengthening Families Program was originally funded by Title V and is presently sustained through Drug Free Communitites,
a substance abuse prevention initiative that began in October 2004.
A total of 28 families (34 adults and 38 children) participated in Strengthening Families between July 2004 and June 2005,
with 64 percent completing all six sessions: Love & Limits, Making HOuse Rules, Encouraging Good Behavior, Using Consequences, Building Bridges, and Protecting Against Substance Abuse.
